Manchester. This was the ancient capital of the kingdom of Northumbria, England’s northernmost city.
It is known for the warmth and hospitality of its inhabitants , the River Tyne’s impressive bridges,(new Millennium Bridge and the old tiding) ,the remains of a Norman keep( the new castle after which the city is known),an elegant medieval cathedral and the new Metro Centre Shopping mall.
Romans founded then city recognizing its military position.
It thrived as an industrial port-coal, locomotives and ship buildings were the business flourished . “Carrying coal to Newcastle” was a well known phrase in those days . Later declined like in other areas . Now the traditional industries are being replaced by shops and the city centre has afresh face with Metro Centre, SAGE and Greatshead.
The Washington Old Hall , the ancestral home of George Washington , first President of USA is in Newcastle,5 miles west of Sunderland.
